Skyros Women’s Summer Retreat, July 9-12th

SSWR2

This summer, join me for a women’s wholeness retreat at one of Greece’s most exquisite islands for 3 or 4 days to rest body-mind, nourish the spirit and expand back into the heart with sisters and friends.  Less than two hours across from Northern Evoia, Skyros remains largely unspoiled and provides an incomparable backdrop for a journey into the self.

1558411_10154534482250055_9049443171987514004_n Move and be moved, touch and be touched: enjoy daily elemental vinyasa yoga for all and massage for the inner and outer bodies. Swim in the crystal-clear waters of Molos, share and be heard in sharing circle, explore the island on foot or rent a bicycle and roam like you did as a little girl. As Tina did: “Skyros is a very special place to me, as it was our first home for a year, when we moved from NYC. I spent my early summers there, running wild and barefoot and free, before my mom passed away. We still have a small piece of land there and a little house, with a handful of overgrown fig trees, a regal almond tree and a stately pomegranate tree. I have returned as an adult, time and again relishing the island’s beauty, quiet and peace– and I can’t wait to share it with you!”

caves2

Rest: You will have 3 or 2 nights options allowing for either Thursday or Friday arrivals. Share a double room (or treat yourself to a single) at Pension Galini, which is a just field away from the island’s most spectacular beach with fabulous (and reasonable) food options, minimarket, canoe-car-bike rental within minutes’ walk.  Kyra-Kali is in her ninth decade and has been running this authentic pension since the 60s; the rooms are equipped with A/C and very clean, the linens crisply ironed and the morning sunrise view, unparalleled.  The town, or “Chorio” is about a 20-minute walk up the hill, weaving through picturesque Cycladic-influenced homes with cafes and bars galore, for those inclined.  Leave your windows open at night and the sounds of the sea will lead you to sleep (the henhouse next door may be your alarm!); wake up early enough and bathe in the light of unparalleled sunrise view. DSCF4308 Practice & Relax: Enjoy 4 classes of juicy flow yoga for women inspired by the elements of nature as you arrive & ground, let go & enjoy, strenghten & transform, open and expand with each class corresponding to healing and supporting one of the basic chakras. There will be a specific therapeutic focus for each session as well, so you can take away techniques and tips to help strengthen, heal and/or protect vulnerable areas such as the lower back, the hips, the shoulders and the neck. These classes with Tina are anatomically honest, sequentially creative, deeply healing and open to all levels of practitioners.179527_10150903204342499_860026470_n Explore: On Saturday, you will have the option of either staying close to home and enjoying the area, or embarking on a sea-view exploration of the island (surcharges apply). See where Achilles spent his childhood, accompanied by the water nymphs… Go snorkelling and discover the beauties hidden underwater… Dive into azure waters, go for a night swim or go fishing…or just float on the water surface and imagine that gravity leaves your body! We will also have the chance to gather fresh local herbs, and swim at the amazing Sarakino beach. The afternoon will culminate with a meal onboard, fit for queens (options will include seasonal/local vegatarian or the local specialty, “astakomakaronada”- lobster pasta).  If you are interested in this option, please let us know so we can book our.sarakiniko2

Indulge: Two evening meals (included, ovo-lacto-pescatarian) will be at two of the island’s oldest eateries; most dishes will be locally-sourced and the meals include wine and dessert.  Dark chocolate and hugs will most certainly be shared, as well.Womens_Retreat Share: Afternoon/evening sessions will be by the sea; there are plenty of quiet expanses along Molos beach for restorative practices, breath-work, the chance to be heard and held in sacred circle, to sit quietly, dance freely, laugh loudly, enjoy fully. Take the chance to heal old wounds, set new intentions, connect to the power of shakti- the divine transformative feminine, within- and come home to your self as you free your voice-body-heart-mind. 100_1871 Share: Afternoon/evening sessions will be by the sea; there are plenty of quiet expanses along Molos beach for restorative practices, breath and body work, the chance to be heard and held in sacred circle, to sit quietly, laugh loudly, enjoy fully. Yogastoalsos στον Κήπο μας

ysa

Six years, already

KPJ180515

I can’t believe it’s already been six years since Guruji’s passing. At the same time, I can scarcely believe it has only been six years, so much has changed in my life since then. I can only be grateful and hope that all the love and strength I so abundantly received from my teachers then, and still do now, allow me to leave this world, a little better than I found it. This is what I wrote, shortly after his passing away, while still living in NY:

“The word guru is derived from the Sanskrit root “gru” literally meaning heavy, weighty. Jokes about rotundity later in life aside (and Guruji loved chocolate until very late in life!), it is understood that the guru is heavy with experience, knowledge and wisdom that he or she imparts on the dedicated student as they see fit.

My favorite interpretation, however, is that the guru is not light like a feather, swayed this way and that by the winds of change.  He is not bound by the citta vrttis (fluctuations of the mindstuff) that we are so prone to: “the weather was great this morning but now it’s kind of crummy… I received praise from so and so and felt great but then so and so criticized me and I felt bad… I looove this pose but haaate that other one…” and on and on, the peaks and valleys the mind latches on to, up and down, constantly swinging back and forth.  The guru is more like a rock than a feather; relentless in faith in the teachings, compassion for the seeker, good cheer for all.

Another etymology is that of a dispeller of darkness; ‘gu’ meaning darkness, and ‘ru’ meaning “dispeller.”  It is commonly understood that your teacher will illuminate the darkness of ignorance with the strength of knowledge.  Thus, by extension, your guru can be any being in your life who helps to shed some light into those dark corners, or as I say at the end of my class, “We give thanks to the beings of light in our lives, who walk the path a little ahead of us and help shine our way.”

kpjjeans

Shri K. Pattabhi Jois was such a light in my life.  Guruji, as he is affectionately known to friends and disciples alike, passed on from this realm on May 18th of this year [2009], at the age of ninety three.  He is the man credited for bringing the system known as ashtanga vinyasa yoga to the West, and you can rest assured that any class you venture into that includes sun salutations and flow draws heavily from his system of breath and movement.

A couple of things I learned from Guruji:

Be loving: What I am learning, cultivating, hoping for, is to posess the kind of love and generosity he had for all.  From the first-time drop-in to the decades-long practitioner, he was so present in that moment, his warmth and love exploding over cultural or language barriers until it manifested in pure love.  Even when he was in dragon mode, bellowing across the room and fierce as lightning, if you looked closely there was a twinkle of a smile in his eye.  He saw the god, and the good, in all his students.

Be Courageous:The concept of limitations does not exist in the guru’s world.  He knows better than I think I know what I am capable of.  “Why fearing?!?  You TRY!!”, he would proclaim, and proceed to wrap me into shapes previously impossible.  “When you come to Mysore?”, he asked in ’03.  Something in me responded without rational thought- ‘Next year, Guruji’.  I made it happen- quit the cushy dayjob and made the five month pilgrimage to study at his feet, to trust that the universe would catch me at some point on the way down as I took the leap.  “Why fearing?!?  You DO!!”.  And I did.

Be Grateful:After class or conference, there was always a sea of eager students queing up to say thanks.  We would touch his feet and sometimes give a hug.  Say thank you.  There was never the rote “you’re welcome” from him.  It was always a variation on the Elvis-like response- “Yes, yes, thank you.  Thank you very much.  Thank you, thank you”.  I never gave much thought to it until his passing, attributing it to his shaky command of the English language perhaps?  I think I get it now.  Without a student, there can be no teacher.  Without a seeker, there can be no practice.  So, thank you.  Thank you very much.  Thank you, thank you.”

Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu

Guru Devo Maheshwara

Guru Sakshath Parambrahma

Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha

Guru is creator Brahma; Guru is preserver Vishnu;

Guru is also the destroyer Siva and he is the source of the Absolute.

The Guru that is nearby, the Guru that is beyond all form.

I offer all my salutations to the Guru. -From Adi Shankara.

Atha Sādhanā Pāda

10285865_10152402334832148_2124101151_o

Atha, Sādhanā Pāda || Now, the chapter on [spiritual] practice.

The last couple of years have been very full, with amazing events, strong activism, incredible retreats, several teacher trainings, budding relationships and much busy-ness, all-around. It’s been amazing and I wouldn’t change any of it, for anything. Now, it is very clear that it is time to withdraw a bit, for a while. To rededicate myself to my full daily practice, some much-needed reflection and more Sanskrit & philosophy study. Accomplishing this has necessitated some time away from the internet and some changes to the weekly classes I am offering, which I have cut down to less than half, for the next few months. It has not been an easy decision, but this line of work demands that health, happiness and wholeness come first. In the meantime, stay tuned as we are gearing up for an amazing new season of Yoga sto Alsos and plans for a yoga retreat by the sea for Agiou Pneumatos are proceeding. It is going to be a remarkable year, all-around.  Thank you for your understanding and hope to see you, down the path.  Loving you, TZ.

Upcoming Yoga Sutra Sunday: April 5th @ 18:00. Join us as we embark on the second chapter of yoga’s seminal text, “On Practice” or “The Way”.  This is truly the core of Patanjali’s teachings for us householder yoga students and I highly recommend joining us.  The talk will be informal and in Greek, while those attending are given handouts with the sutras we are discussing and chanting.

Public class schedule for Spring ’15:

Monday & Wednesday @ 20:00, Ashtanga at Maya Yogashala
Tuesday @ 18:30, Open at The yoga room at union
Wednesday @ 11.30, Yoga Therapy for Alma Zois

Holmes Place classes:
Athens: Mondays @ 12:00
Marousi: Fridays @ 12:00
